Sam Simonds is an American writer and director who has spent his last few years researching and filming in ‘Atolan. His works are largely inspired by directors who emerged from the LA Rebellion. He is interested in stories which challenge perceived universal truths and explore indigenous knowledge systems which articulate relationships within local worlds.

‘Atolan recounts a moment when an elder of the ‘Atolan Amis Nation shares land memories with Miku, a young adult who has recently returned to ‘Atolan. The elder recounts a summer long ago when their family’s ancestral land was taken. The memories in ‘Atolan take place during 1958 - a time when Amis language was prohibited and many elders who grew up during Japanese colonial rule still used Japanese to communicate with Han-Chinese migrants. This story is part of a larger project which weaves together land memories of elders with a land and cultural reclamation movement led by a cohort of young adults in ‘Atolan.
