The Vast Deep Blue Ocean

喇外‧達賴 / Laway Talay 台東阿美族人，1961年生，十八歲高職畢業即北上闖蕩。從事過板模工、作業員、民歌手及建築繪圖員等工作。由於自小愛好繪畫，因此當兵退伍以後執意從事跟美術有關的工作，幸運毛遂自薦得到了室內設計師助理的學習機會，二十八歲成立個人工作室。三十八歲那年參加全景地方記錄人員培訓班之後，開始用影像紀錄關於阿美族人的故事。 Pangcah(Amis) from Taitung, born in 1961, went north to work when he was age 18. He had worked as a singer, formwork worker, and architectural draftsman. According to his interest in painting, he started his career in design and had a studio when age 28. At the age of 38, after attending the Panorama Local Recorder Training, he began to use video to record stories about the Pangcah people.

喇外的父親自喇外還未達學齡前便上船擔任船員的工作，喇外從此只能每隔一、兩年隨母親自台東搭公路局金馬號到高雄港探望父親。這是許多阿美族人在50年代至80年代間的共同記憶。2013年4月，喇外帶著攝影機，藉紀錄6個阿美族船員的機會，自南太平洋一個美屬島嶼－波納貝，登上了來自台灣的海滿號遠洋漁船，隨船出海拍攝圍網作業過程，以及船員們在船上的工作情形。為期二十幾天海上的拍攝工作，喇外深刻體會了船員們緊繃艱辛的工作與生活。到底，父親二十幾年的船員生涯，又是怎麼熬過來的？而隨導演上船拍攝的唯一伙伴，正是擔任攝影的兒子－馬耀‧喇外。 As Laway was little, his father had left home to be a sailor, he could only take a very long way to Kaohsiung Port with his mother to meet his father every one or two years. It happened to many Amis families back in the 50-80’s. In April 2013, Laway brought a camera and took the opportunity to record the 6 Amis sailors, he boarded the oceangoing vessel Hai-Man from Taiwan, and went out to sea to photograph sailor’s life on boats. During the 20-day filming work at sea, Laway finally understood how hard the sailor’s life is. How could his father survive in this difficult situation? And the only partner who accompanied Laway on board for filming was his own son, Mayaw Laway, who was in charge of photography.
